Flexpart and Flexinvert have been updated to be able to model satellite observations and to include these in inversions. TROPOMI retrievals of XCH4 only have been used so far, but the code can easily be applied to other retrievals. Satellite observations can be used with or without surface observations in the inversion.
Flexpart modifications included changing from the ascii formatted file RELEASES to a NetCDF file describing satellite retrievals for which SRRs are to be calculated. For satellites, Flexpart computes a total column SRR which convolves the information of the prior profile used in the retrieval and the averaging kernel.
For more details on the use of satellite observations with Flexpart and Flexinvert please look for the paper Thompson et al. (2024), which will be available as a preprint from EGUSphere soon.
